On tribes

15 Jul

When Aleta and I were planning our departure from the US, I kept thinking how wrong it felt to leave the amazing tribe of friends I have. What am I doing? I love my friends!

Well, this was one of those times when you have to perserve and believe that you can keep your friendships and thus remain part of your tribe. So, we went on with our move and have been here in Spain for more than 3 months. I’d been working like a crazed man for the last 11 months and I was exhausted and drained — I desperately needed a break. Fortunately, last week Aleta and I finally took off to Nowhere, the European version of Burning Man that happens only 2.5 hours away from Barcelona.

Right at arriving at this amazing plance in the Spanish desert, this warm feeling of welcome and happiness overcame me. We were invited and welcomed to the Werkhaus Barrio (theme camp, that feeds nowhere volunteers) which whom we partied for the whole week. And even more so, Rich and Pauly Paulus made us feel amazingly welcome — they took is in, got our stuff to our camp-site and made us their neighbors.

The first morning at Nowhere I was laying in a hammock, reading, napping and listening to pile of Danes talk, this deep thought hit me:

I’m really not leaving my tribe. While I am more distant in my tribe, I’m working to expand the whole tribe. Across more countries and more cultures. Even bigger and more amazing than my tribe of friends already is.

Tyler and Jamie started this quite a few years and ago and my positive experiences at Nowhere were a direct result of their tribal powers spreading across the globe. Thanks Tyler, Jamie, Pauly and Rich — Nowhere was exactly the sort of rejuvenation my spirit needed. My head is full of ideas for next year and how I can contribute in some interesting ways.

But even more so, I feel richer in friends and that my tribe of friends is growing. Onward!
